REIKI FAQ’s
Reiki – An OverviewREI means “universal” and refers also to the spiritual dimensions and the soul.
KI means the vital life force energy which flows through all that is alive.
Reiki is simply about energy and it is also a system in which to apply this energy into daily life.
Reiki is not a religion. It holds no doctrines, creeds or contradictions to the Universal Laws of Consciousness and Love. No matter where you may be at a certain point in your life, Reiki will harmonize and embrace your philosophical center-point, adding to it the Divine Presence.
Once an individual is attuned to Reiki through Initiations, they are permanently linked without the need of conscious alteration of the mind, either through meditation, prayer or imaging.
Simply placing one's hands on oneself, or another person, allows the energy to flow through the individual. It fills the Reiki practitioner's body first and then flows out through the practitioner's hands into the individual who is receiving the healing.
Reiki energy comes from the God-Force (Source) and is an extremely powerful healing energy. It is one of the few forms of healing that can be used to heal oneself.
Reiki does not conflict with other health-care, but enhances its results. It does not interfere with traditional medical treatment, but facilitates benefits. Reiki speeds the healing process, and provides a source of restoring energy while one is ill, under medical treatment, or in recovery.
Reiki healing is a pure energy form. When it is combined with the sincere desire of the healer, who is willing to effect a cleansing within their emotional and spiritual consciousness, a total healing can occur.
We must always remember that the energy of the God-Force is neutral and awaits the positive, productive empowerment by the person healer. The Reiki practitioner plays an instrumental part in transformation, and yet ultimately it is up to the healer (the person receiving) to manifest harmony and balance in their life.
The Reiki practitioner is a channel and must not allow the "Ego-Will" to desire the healer well. The Reiki practitioner must be a clear vessel through which the healing energy flows. This allows the highest Soul Purpose to be the outcome of the healing.
Reiki is a tool for use at any moment, any time; anywhere for on the spot stress release, pain relief and quick energy. In short, Reiki is a holistic self-help technique for directing natural life energy. No special environment or equipment is needed and age makes no difference.
By following steps taught by a Reiki Master Teacher, anyone is able to direct the "light energy" of Reiki to meet individual needs.
History & Origin of Reiki
The history and origin of Reiki can be traced back to ancient Tibet thousands of years ago. The Tibetan Lamas possessed a deep understanding of the nature of matter, energy and spirit.
Using this profound intelligence they healed their bodies and soul and led their spirit to an experience of unity.
This precious knowledge was guarded and preserved by the spiritual leaders of ancient Tibet and other ancient cultures. It was available only to a few people who devoted their life to their spiritual practice and in turn passed it on to others by word of mouth.
Many cultures have always been aware of the existence of a life force energy that moves through and connects everything into a giant cosmic matrix.
The Japanese call it “Ki”, the Chinese call it “Chi”, Christians call it “Holy Ghost”, and Hindus call it “Prana” and Kahunas call it “Mana”.
The energy is the same; however its application and theory in each culture differ greatly.
In the beginning of the 19th century a Japanese man by the name of Mikao Usui discovered the key to this ancient knowledge after a lifelong quest to uncover the source of ancient healing techniques.
Mikao Usui founded: the “Society of the Usui Spiritual Energy Healing Method” or in Japanese: the “Usui Reiki Ryôhô Gakkai” in the early 1900’s in Japan and shared his wisdom, which is known to the modern world as Reiki.
Mikao Usui was a Tendai Buddhist born into a high-ranking Samurai family in 1865. He was a gifted martial artist holding the highest license of proficiency. He was a well-known healer, spiritual teacher and Tendai priest of his time.
Through his many studies, travels and meditations he created the most simple and natural method of healing. It is also the most effective and powerful way of transferring pure life force energy in addition to being a guide to reach enlightenment in this lifetime.
Mikao Usui’s teachings reached the West in 1937, eleven years after he passed on. One of Usui’s better known students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, is responsible for this contribution to the world as well as one of Hayashi ’s students, a Hawaiian woman of Japanese decent named Hawayo Takata.
When Reiki was introduced to the West by Hayashi and Takata, it was adapted to suit the political situation of the time and the Western mind.
Hawayo Takata was the first foreigner to open a Reiki clinic and school in Hawaii in 1937. Her teacher, Chujiro Hayashi traveled from Japan and lived in America for one year to help her establish her practice. Hayashi then returned to Japan to continue working in his own clinic, the Hayashi Spiritual Energy Society.
Hawayo Takata continued teaching Reiki in America with her own particular, informal style and is very famous for her unique personality and creative approach to teaching. She was a loving, giving healer and before passing on in 1980, she taught 22 Reiki Masters to carry on her teachings.
It is through the combined strengths and efforts of all these dedicated people that the system of Reiki is being practiced in every country of the world and to this day is still spreading like fire . . .
Reiki Attunements
An attunement is an initiation for students into the system of Reiki and once initiated they are permanently linked to the Reiki energy.
The attunement process is essential to the system of Reiki and is a wonderful and unique experience.
At Fly to the Light Healing Studio, students receive individual Traditional Usui Shiki Ryoho attunements in a special attunement ceremony.
There are four separate levels of Usui Reiki which involves: Four attunements in Level I; two attunements in Level II and one attunement is given in Level III.
At each level of attunement, the vibratory rate is heightened and the student is able to tap into a higher, wider channel of the Universal Energy. Each attunement takes you a step further to re–align yourself with the natural function of your mental, physical emotional and spiritual bodies.
Reiki Symbols and Mantras
Reiki Symbols and Healing Mantras were introduced to the system of Reiki by Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s.
Mikao Usui realized he needed to create a tool to make it easier for people to practice his spiritual teachings. He began teaching the Reiki symbols and healing mantras since their power and effectiveness did not require that students be able to meditate or have years of spiritual practice to enjoy their healing benefits.
There are a total of four symbols in the Usui Shiki Ryoho System of Natural Healing: Three are given in Level II and one is given in Level III.
Reiki attunements initiate the students mind and body to the special symbols which amplify the Reiki energy for a deeper and more profound degree of healing.
After the attunement, whenever the student brings a specific symbol into awareness, the same energies that they were linked to during the attunement are quickly and easily activated and begin to flow for healing themselves or others.
The four mantras Mikao Usui introduced to the Reiki system are healing syllables and each mantra invokes a specific healing vibration and energy.
Mantras are words or sounds which are chanted or spoken in conjunction with the symbols to bring forth the combined healing energy.
The symbols and their full names have not been printed on this page to honor their sacredness. They are only revealed to those who have been attuned into the second or third level of Reiki.
Reiki Experiences
People’s experiences with Reiki energy are very positive, unique and relaxing.
They usually feel the energy as heat and experience peaceful wave-like sensations in their body as the Reiki washes down clearing obstructions and strengthening the flow of energy.
Completely relaxed, the body and mind will drift away and in this quiet calm space they may experience a glowing radiance that surrounds them that can be experienced as color patterns or pure love.
At the end of the session, they feel at peace, refreshed and connected with a restored balance in body, mind and spirit.
Reiki's Healing Ways
Reiki can be used to balance, heal or improve any condition of the body, the emotions, the mind and the spirit.
Reiki is an unlimited holistic method of healing. It will work on physical problems, emotional issues, and a stressful or worried mind and it is particularly good for inducing relaxation and reducing stress.
Reiki increases our vitality and immune system, assists the body’s natural healing abilities, re-establishes spiritual equilibrium, loosens up blocked energies and promotes a state of natural relaxation, cleanses the body of toxins, adjusts itself according to the need of the recipient and generally gives one a sense of happiness, improved health and well-being.
Self - Healing Practice
‘The natural force within each of us is the greatest healer of disease.' Hippocrates
We all have different goals and incentive when practicing our hands on healing.
Whatever the reason; health and healing begin with a willingness to change, and dedication with your hands on healing practice.
How quickly or how gradually you heal depends on many factors. How ingrained is the negative energy, thought form and imbalance? How long have you held the negative energy in your body, mind and spirit? How often do you practice self- healing with Reiki? How much energy are you able to channel? Are you setting your healing as a priority?
It is recommended you do a minimum of two sessions a week, keeping in mind the more you use the energy the stronger it will grow. Set aside a time of the day for your hands on healing practice. Take your time and enjoy this quiet, calm healing space. Listen to that little voice that guides your way.
In combination with your hands on healing practice you can embrace and contribute to healthy lifestyle habits to manifest harmony, change and transformation.
Develop a proper exercise & nutrition program and drink plenty of pure water. Get plenty of sunlight and fresh, clean air. Maintain a positive, grateful attitude in life. Make time for relaxation and your hands on healing practice to reduce stress, worry and the rush in life!

The Reiki Spiritual Precepts
Mikao Usui designed the Five Spiritual Precepts in order to complete the System of Reiki to include healing for the body, mind and spirit.
Mikao Usui believed that the purpose of his teachings was not only to heal illness, but to also combine a true mind and a healthy body; this in turn creates happiness and enjoyment in life.
The Reiki Precepts are unique to Reiki and are taught in Level I as a facilitator of growth and new beginnings and a guide to gain enlightenment in this lifetime.
Another important aspect of these teachings is the element: “For today only”. This acts as a focus to keep the practitioners mind on the present moment.
The Five Precepts are to be contemplated by Reiki practitioners during Gasshô meditation as a way to calm and strengthen the mind.
